<image:title>Featured Stories - Herbert “Herbie” Turman The 1948 National Marble Champion - The excitement began in the spring as each school produced a marble champion. The mibsters squared off around a ten-foot square of hard clay. A ring was drawn in the clay and the marbles were arranged in the shape of a cross within the circle. The winner was the one who knocked out over half of the arranged marbles. The school champions moved on to compete in a tournament to decide who would be the Beloit City and the Greater Beloit Area champs. The tournament, in the early days, was held at Summit Avenue Park and then later at Vernon Park. LIFE magazine even covered the grand finals at the Summit Avenue park in 1940.</image:title>

<image:title>Featured Stories - Herbert “Herbie” Turman The 1948 National Marble Champion - Herbie’s father Frank moved to Beloit after serving in World War 1, where several of his siblings were living. The 1920 U. S. Census showed Frank living on Race St. with his brothers Jessie, Willie, Eugene, sisters Scottie, Florine and cousin Geneva. Like many African Americans, the Turmans were a part of the great migration North from Mississippi to Beloit for factory work. Frank worked at Fairbanks Morse for 38 years and retired in 1953. He married Rosa, a woman of white and Indian ancestry, on April 5, 1922. Together they raised twelve children, the four children from Rosa’s previous marriage and the eight they had together.</image:title>

      <image:title>About - About The Founder</image:title>
<image:caption>My name is Cheryl Johnson Caldwell and I was born in Beloit, Wisconsin in 1955. I am the fourth generation of my family to live and be raised in Beloit. Many of my family’s ancestral roots can be traced back to the year 1916, as they were a part of the great migration to Beloit. My grandmother wrote in her journal notes that a relative encouraged her father to move north to Wisconsin because it was “God’s country.” Her family arrived in Beloit, April 1, 1921. My family roots run deep in the African American history of Beloit so I am extremely proud to embark on this meaningful journey. My inspiration for establishing the African American Historical Society of Beloit goes back to the year 2010. I was researching the history of Beloit for a documentary that my husband and I were producing entitled, Through Their Eyes, The History of African Americans in Beloit, Wisconsin From 1836-1970. I realized the lack of recorded and written information on hand at the Beloit Public Library and the Beloit Historical Society. I found the history books on Beloit and Rock County to be thoroughly written but had very little information on African Americans. It left me wondering where could I find the history on Beloit”s African Americans, the people, churches, civic leaders, business owners, educators, sport stars, social clubs, trailblazers and politicians? Why wasn’t it important to include more of the history of African Americans in these books and publications? The Book of Beloit Vol. 1, a history book written on Beloit, Wisconsin was published in 1936, by the Beloit Daily News, covers the history of Beloit from 1836-1936. It had very little information on African Americans, although they had been recorded living in Beloit by 1836. In contrast you’ll find information on Italians, Greeks, Irish, French and Norwegians who were “pioneers” that came to Beloit were covered adequately. The Book of Beloit Vol. II, however, also published by the Beloit Daily News in 1986, included a well-written section on African-Americans, entitled, “In Search of Freedom,” written by Tom Polaski. After the completion and debut of our documentary in June 2011, I realized, even more so, that the recorded history of Beloit cannot exclude the rich history of African Americans and their contributions. We played a significant and integral role in the shaping of not only our African American community but also the city as a whole. I have always envisioned the need for someone to establish an organization that would increase the visibility of our rich history that exists here in Beloit. I finally asked myself “If not me, then who? If not now, then when?” There is still a lot of Beloit’s African American history to be told; it just has to be unearthed, researched, shared and documented. There are current and former residents of Beloit that can provide a first hand account of our community’s early history, unfortunately they are aging and their memories are starting to fade. If we don’t take the time and address the need to tap into them as a resource we will lose valuable information. This would be a great tragedy! I believe through a collaborative effort, dedication and participation, as a whole, we can embrace a renewed sense of pride and an unwavering determination to never forget where we’ve come from and what those before us had to overcome. Let the journey begin!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Irma Black Bradford, was born and raised in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, but now calls Beloit home. It was during her senior year in high school that conversation between her teachers and her parents began about Irma’s recruitment to play basketball for a semi-pro team. As a point guard, she was considered a talented high school basketball player who could shoot, dribble and handle the basketball. Irma’s parents gave permission for her to join a barnstorming basketball team called the “New York Harlem Chic’s” in 1959 after graduating from high school. The team was owned and managed by a man from Beloit named, Dempsey Hovland. He chose Beloit for the location of the team’s headquarters. Segregation was widespread in our country at this time and Hovland was someone who advocated for minorities to have an equal opportunity to participate in sports, especially women. He managed an all-white women’s team called the Texas Cowgirls; the New York Harlem Chic’s was his first all-women’s African American team.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Irma had never heard of the city of Beloit, but was excited about an opportunity to continue to play a game she loved. Upon arriving in Beloit, Irma remembers staying at the Hobson Hotel or the Marvin Hotel and eating meals at the Hobson Club. In 1959 these were probably the only places in Beloit where a group of African American women’s basketball players could find lodging and meals. After several months of practice, Irma and her teammates were ready to start their inaugural season as the New York Harlem Chic’s.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The team packed their belongings along with their basketball equipment into a station wagon and sat out on their barnstorming tour. Some of the states they travelled to for games were Minnesota, Nebraska, the Dakotas and they even went as far as the state of Washington. Irma remembers staying in nice hotels, being well-received by the town’s spectators and treated like celebrities. She recalls the excitement of traveling from city to city enjoying the competition and sometimes playing two games in one day. The New York Harlem Chic’s were at times matched up to play men’s basketball teams, which was definitely a challenge. The Chic’s showed off their skills as serious basketball players but also added some fun entertainment for the fans in attendance. Despite traveling crammed in a vehicle for weeks at a time, Irma said “it was good fun and it gave me an opportunity to meet some wonderful people.” By no means did they become rich. Irma and her teammates were paid weekly, the agreement was that their room and board was paid for, but they were responsible for providing their own meals. Eating out in restaurants became costly so they purchased a hotplate and occasionally cooked in their rooms.</image:caption>

<image:title>Genealogy - The Assignment That Became My Passion</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1988, I enrolled in a class at Penn State University and one of our assignments was to create a family tree. Little did I know that this assignment would eventually become my passion. Over the 32 years, my penchant for genealogy has evolved into researching, documenting, sharing and writing family stories. I hadn’t heard of the five year old website ancestry.com in 1988, so it wasn’t a resource that I utilize to do my research. I relied on good old fashion oral history, conversations with my grandmothers and other family members. I was also fortunate to have hand-written documents from family members that recorded the names and dates of many of my ancestors. My only regret is that I did not sit down and record conversations with many of my relatives that have now passed. That’s why I strongly urge people to interview their relatives while they are still alive because their information and stories are so valuable. I still have that creased and faded bright yellow poster board with my handwritten family tree chart and notes from thirty-two years ago. In my eyes it’s a valuable family treasure with a lot of recorded history. Cheryl Caldwell, AAHSB Founder</image:caption>
